The Towns County Sheriff's Office has introduced a new community-focused program called Operation Lights Out that helps drivers replace broken headlights instead of simply issuing tickets.
If a driver is pulled over for a headlight that is out, deputies will issue a warning and provide a voucher to help cover the cost of a replacement at a local NAPA Auto Parts store. The driver can then replace the headlight and show proof of the repair to the Towns County Sheriff's Office to complete the process.
Having two working headlights is important for safety, especially at night, so other drivers can clearly see vehicles on the road.
The idea for the program came from Sheriff's Auxiliary member Joe Liguori after he experienced a close call involving a vehicle with a missing headlight. Law enforcement is now taking a more understanding approach by educating drivers and helping them fix the problem rather than immediately punishing them.
The program is supported by the Sheriff's Office and local NAPA stores. NAPA's manager in Hiawassee, Kayla Kimkowski, has backed the initiative and helped expand it to another location in Blairsville, meaning the voucher can be used at either store.
Sheriff Coleman fully supports the program, seeing it as a way to help the community rather than simply handing out punishments. He believes it benefits drivers and helps ease financial burdens, especially as the cost of living continues to rise.
This initiative focuses on keeping the roads safe while supporting local residents. Drivers are encouraged to check their vehicle lights regularly to avoid being pulled over. For more information, contact the Towns County Sheriff's Office.
