Union County Fire and Rescue reminds residents to follow outdoor burning safety standards

BLAIRSVILLE, Ga. — With fall approaching and leaves beginning to drop, Union County Fire and Rescue is reminding residents to use caution when burning yard debris to prevent accidental wildfires.

Officials said outdoor burning of hand-piled leaves and other natural yard waste is permitted, but property owners must follow the Georgia Forestry Commission’s (GFC) outdoor burning safety standards. While most small burns are controlled, the department warned that some can spread quickly if proper precautions are not taken.

The GFC’s “Take Five” campaign encourages residents to remember the acronym “S-S-T-A-R” before starting a burn:

  • S – Space: Keep at least 25 feet between the fire and woodlands, and 50 feet between the fire and any structure.

  • T – Time: Burning is only allowed from sunrise to sunset.

  • A – Attendance: A responsible person must remain with the fire until it is completely out.

  • R – Reasonable Precautions: Maintain a pressurized water source, create a barrier around the fire, have tools ready, and be aware of weather conditions such as high winds or low humidity.

Fire officials also reminded residents that only natural yard debris may be burned. Household garbage, construction materials, or other man-made items are prohibited.

Residents are encouraged to review outdoor burning laws and safety guidelines at www.gatrees.org.

Union County Fire and Rescue added, “Our family protecting your family.”
