UNION COUNTY, Ga. — The Union County Sheriff's Office is warning residents about an ongoing phone scam in which fraudsters are using the name of Sheriff Shawn Dyer to trick people into sending money or sharing personal information.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, scammers are contacting community members and falsely claiming to be Sheriff Dyer or representatives of the department. The calls are designed to create fear and urgency, often involving threats related to warrants, fines, missed jury duty, or other legal issues.

Officials emphasized that Sheriff Dyer will never call residents to request money and that the Sheriff’s Office does not demand payment over the phone under any circumstances. Any call requesting immediate payment, gift cards, wire transfers, or personal information while claiming to represent the Sheriff’s Office should be considered a scam.

The department also noted that scammers frequently use spoofed phone numbers, making it appear as though calls are coming from a legitimate law enforcement agency.

Residents who receive suspicious calls are advised to hang up immediately and contact the Sheriff’s Office directly using its official phone number to verify the information.

The Sheriff’s Office is encouraging the public to share the warning with friends, family, and neighbors, stressing that awareness is one of the most effective ways to prevent fraud.
