The Union County Sheriff’s Office is once again alerting residents about an ongoing phone scam in which callers impersonate law enforcement officers and threaten arrest over alleged missed jury duty.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, scammers are contacting individuals and falsely claiming they failed to appear for jury duty. The caller then demands immediate payment of a fine, warning that an arrest will follow if the payment is not made right away.
Authorities stress that this is a scam and urge residents to remember several key points:
Real law enforcement officers will never call to demand immediate payment over the phone.
Scammers often request payment through gift cards, wire transfers, or payment apps — all major red flags.
Residents should never provide personal or financial information to unsolicited callers.
Anyone who receives a call of this nature is advised to hang up immediately and report the incident to local law enforcement or to the Federal Trade Commission at reportfraud.ftc.gov.
The Union County Sheriff’s Office also encourages the public to review the attached flyer for details on its upcoming Fraud and Scam Class, which will cover this scam and others currently targeting the area. Residents are urged to attend and to share the information with friends and family to help protect the community.
“Staying informed is the best defense,” the Sheriff’s Office said. “Please help us spread the word and keep Union County safe.”
