BLAIRSVILLE, Ga. — As hurricane season peaks, Union County Emergency Management Agency (UCEMA) is urging residents in the North Georgia mountains to prepare for potential severe weather, including high winds, thunderstorms, tornadoes, and flash flooding, even far from coastal areas.
Although hurricanes weaken as they move inland, UCEMA warns that they can still cause significant impacts, such as flooding, downed trees, and power outages. The agency emphasized preparedness as hurricane season, which began June 1, enters its most active period over the next few months.
To stay informed, UCEMA recommends registering for the CodeRED notification system, which provides emergency alerts for severe weather. Residents can sign up or update their information at www.unioncountyga.gov or by calling UCEMA at 706-439-6091.
UCEMA advises building an emergency kit with enough non-perishable food, water, and medicine for each family member to last at least one week. Kits should also include extra cash, a battery-powered radio, flashlights, and a cell phone charger.
Residents are encouraged to review their insurance policies and contact their agent to ensure adequate coverage for home repairs or replacement. UCEMA noted that standard homeowners’ insurance does not cover flooding, and separate flood insurance may be necessary for homeowners and renters.
“Severe weather and hurricanes can affect everyone,” UCEMA said in a statement. “A prepared community benefits us all.”
