Union County Warns of Spoofed Jail Phone Scam

The Union County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a phone scam in which callers spoof the number of the Union County Jail and try to extract money.
Officials said they received multiple reports Wednesday morning of the scheme, which mirrors previous scams the agency has publicized. Scammers make the incoming call appear on caller ID as originating from the jail, then pressure victims for payments.
The Sheriff’s Office does not solicit money by phone, accept bond or other payments over the phone, request banking information, or ask anyone to buy gift cards, bitcoin or make wire transfers.
Anyone who receives a suspicious call should hang up and dial the Sheriff’s Office directly at (706) 439-6066 to verify the contact. If the caller becomes angry or tries to keep the person on the line, it is likely a scam, officials said.
Sgt. Bob Calamari will hold a free scam and fraud awareness class at 10 a.m. Nov. 10 at St. Francis Catholic Church. The public is invited.
