Cherokee County Sets Sept. 16 Hearing on Transit Grant Application

MURPHY, N.C. — Cherokee County will hold a public hearing next week on its proposed Community Transportation Program application to the North Carolina Department of Transportation.

The hearing is set for 5:30 p.m. Sept. 16 before the Cherokee County Board of Commissioners. County officials said the application must be submitted to NCDOT no later than Oct. 2.

The Community Transportation Program helps coordinate existing transportation services in Cherokee County and provides options for residents in the service area. Cherokee County Transit currently operates the service with conversion vans, lift-equipped vehicles and SUVs.

The application covers the period from July 1, 2027, through June 30, 2028. The county’s notice did not list a total funding request. Officials noted that any local share would depend on available state funding.

The application may be inspected from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 40 Peachtree St., Suite 110. Written comments should be sent to Jennifer West before Sept. 14.
