More “Dolly Good Deeds” Planned for Dolly Parton Day in Murphy

MURPHY, N.C. — The list of “Dolly Good Deeds” planned for Dolly Parton Day on September 25 continues to grow, with businesses, organizations and individuals finding their own ways to help others.
Dolly Parton Day is not about one big event happening downtown. The idea is much simpler: ordinary people doing good things for someone else or for their community, inspired by Dolly’s lifelong example of kindness and generosity.
Here are the good deeds we know about so far, with the newest additions first:
Cherokee County Clerk of Court staff will prepare care packages for residents of the Alzheimer’s unit at Murphy Nursing and Rehab.
Mountain Vale Lodge is collecting nonperishable food through September 25 for local church food pantries and the homeless shelter thrift store pantry.
The Homeless Shelter Thrift Store will hold a $5 bag-of-books sale, with bags holding up to 30 books, along with special savings on pink and butterfly-themed items.
Chevelle’s, Ciao Bella and Flower Hound Farm are teaming up in different ways. Flower Hound is collecting donations for Valley River Humane Society, Ciao Bella is creating a Little Free Library, and Chevelle’s will donate a percentage of sales to the local library.
Unaka Senior Center will give free books to homeschooled and pre-kindergarten children from 10 a.m. until noon.
Legends Steakhouse will give a free book to every child who comes in to dine with their family that day.
All American Estate Clearing and Antiques is offering free water and popsicles to customers.
Enchanted Butterfly is making small clay hearts for anyone who wants one as a reminder that they matter and are loved just as they are.
Debbie Thigpen plans to pay it forward by giving someone an Ingles gift card as a random act of kindness.
Moog Components Group has set up donation boxes for needed supplies for the Valley River Humane Society and will continue collecting through the end of the month.
A group of anonymous pickleball women from Cherokee and Clay counties is making donations in Dolly’s name to the Extra Mile Shoe Fund, which provides shoes for local students in need.
Peachtree Community Development Club will provide breakfast for teachers and staff at Peachtree Elementary School and donate tissues and antibacterial wipes for classrooms.
The Rotary Club of Murphy is collecting books for older students to give to the library and collecting money for Imagination Library.
The Crown in Brasstown will donate 5 percent of its September 25 sales to Valley River Humane Society and is also collecting food, blankets and other shelter needs.
These join several Dolly Good Deeds already announced.
Murphy School of Dance will hold a beginner-friendly Dolly-themed line dancing class, with all proceeds going to Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library.
The Little Shop will offer free clothing and hopes to have treats available for visitors.
FairyCross Bottle Shop is collecting toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, floss and socks for local fourth- and fifth-grade students.
One local resident plans to cook a meal using Dolly recipes for her 88-year-old neighbor.
Hiwassee Dam Senior Center members will create sunshine packs for 15 homebound seniors.
Valley River Arts Guild at the Murphy Art Center is holding a legacy donation drive, collecting books and encouraging kindness throughout the day.
High Lonesome Therapeutic Equestrian Center will have 33 volunteers helping 14 athletes and five horses compete at the North Carolina Special Olympics state equestrian competition in Tryon.
Wagner Worx Co-Working Bar will donate $1 from each glass of Dolly Parton wine sold that day to the Imagination Library.
And the list is still growing.
You do not need to organize a public event to participate. A Dolly Good Deed can be as simple as helping a neighbor, buying someone a meal, volunteering, making a donation, picking up litter or finding another way to make someone’s day a little better.
