Towns County Interim Sheriff Anthony Coleman deputized members of the Hiawassee Police Department on Monday evening during the City of Hiawassee Council work session, marking a major step toward a more coordinated public safety presence in the community.
As part of the ceremony, the two agencies also finalized and signed a mutual aid agreement. The agreement ensures that both departments can more easily assist one another across jurisdictional lines, share resources when needed, and respond more efficiently to emergencies.
The swearing-in highlighted the strong working relationship that has developed between Towns County Sheriff’s Office and the Hiawassee Police Department since Coleman was appointed to the Sheriff position. The action creates a more unified law enforcement effort for residents of both Towns County and the City of Hiawassee.
With the new arrangement in place, citizens can expect improved response capabilities and increased cooperation between the agencies—furthering a shared mission of keeping the community safe.
