Longtime local doctor Brian Mitchell subject of new documentary

Dr. Brian Mitchell, a beloved physician whose decades of service helped shape the landscape of healthcare in Western North Carolina, is the subject of a newly-released mini-documentary by local filmmaker Harrison Keely.

Titled “Brian Mitchell – The small-town doctor who changed everything,” the film follows Mitchell’s journey from his childhood in Boston to his pivotal era at Murphy Medical Center, now known as Erlanger Western Carolina Hospital.

“Dr. Mitchell’s story isn’t just about medicine—it’s about hope, perseverance, and putting people before business,” said filmmaker Harrison Keely. “He dedicated his life to improving healthcare in the mountains.”

The film offers rare insight into the early days of local healthcare, when emergency services were scarce, ambulances were run by the funeral home, and even EKGs were mailed away to be read by doctors. Through Dr. Mitchell’s own words, viewers learn how he performed life-saving procedures under pressure, helped open the area’s first intensive care unit, and led efforts to expand hospital services, cardiac care, and community wellness programs.

“Sometimes the best I could do wasn’t enough,” Dr. Mitchell says in the film. “But when I did succeed, I knew I was meant to be there—that God had put me there for that moment.”

The documentary also explores Mitchell’s marriage to nurse Nancy Troxler, his nearly two decades of leadership on the Cherokee County school board, his work in creating the Murphy pool and wellness center, and his critical role during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“This is one of the most powerful and inspiring stories I’ve had the privilege to share,” Keely said. “Dr. Mitchell’s life reminds us how one person’s dedication can transform an entire community.”

This short film is the latest in Keely’s ongoing series highlighting remarkable people in Western North Carolina and beyond. Previous mini-documentaries have featured subjects such as magician Carl Dreher, auctioneer Tim Ryan, brain aneurysm survivor Makenna Cook, dance choreographer Bob Dalsemer, sheep shearer Charlotte Crittenden, theatre director Laurel Adams, and educator George Ramsey.
