Sheriff Dustin Smith

Cherokee County Sheriff

On Thursday, November 20, 2025, the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office hosted approximately thirty (30) students from Murphy High School. These are students who are enrolled in the Career and Technical Education program, which serves to prepare students for employment or further education in their chosen fields. The program offers students career pathways, work-based learning, industry credentials (for those who seek certifications in certain fields), and college credit.

While at the Sheriff’s Office, the students were provided opportunities to interact with members of the Sheriff’s Administration, Detectives, civilian staff, Patrol Deputies and Detention staff. The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigations (SBI) was also on site, offering students insights into state-level investigations and the many opportunities available there as well.

In addition to the presentations, students were also provided with a supervised tour of the Sheriff’s Office and Detention Center. While at the Detention Center, students were allowed to learn about the many roles and responsibilities of being a Detention Officer. Students were not exposed to any inmates or inmate occupied areas, for their protection.

The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office is proud of the men and women who serve our community, and this is just one of the many ways in which they serve. The opportunity to influence students in a positive manner is a cherished one among the many ways we serve. If we can positively impact the life of just one student, this makes this event a worthy cause, and one we proudly stand behind.
