ANDREWS, NC – On March 2, 2026, newly appointed Sheriff Chris Wood visited the students of Andrews Elementary School to participate in a community reading initiative. The Sheriff spent the morning engaging with young learners and emphasizing the critical importance of foundational literacy in early childhood development.
During his visit, Sheriff Wood selected the timeless Dr. Seuss classic, Green Eggs and Ham, to read aloud to several students. The event served as an opportunity for the county’s top law enforcement officer to build positive relationships with the community’s youth.
“It was a wonderful experience being back at this school, and I am honored to be able to read this Dr. Seuss classic to them,” said Sheriff Wood. “This is a book I had read to me as a child, and it is one I have since read to my own children. Sharing this moment with the students at Andrews Elementary reminds us all that the path to a successful future begins with a love for learning.”
The Impact of Community Leadership in Schools
The presence of law enforcement in educational settings for positive outreach is a well-documented strategy for fostering community trust. Academic research into "prosocial modeling" suggests that when children see authority figures engaging in non-punitive, supportive activities—such as reading—it strengthens the social fabric and encourages civic engagement.
Sheriff Wood’s choice of Green Eggs and Ham is significant in the realm of pedagogy. Published in 1960, the book was written using a vocabulary of only 50 distinct words, a challenge posed to Dr. Seuss by his publisher to create a compelling story for beginning readers. This "controlled vocabulary" method remains a staple in early childhood education for building reading confidence.
