Towns County Sheriff's Office Reminds Residents of Welfare Check Program

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. — The Towns County Sheriff’s Office is reminding residents that its welfare check program is an established service and has been expanded to reach more people who may need regular check-ins.

The office said it has received questions about welfare check services and wants the public to know the program has been available for years. According to the Sheriff’s Office, the service dates to the administration of former Sheriff Rudy Eller and has continued under every administration since.

Sheriff Anthony Coleman has expanded the program, the office said, to serve seniors, people living alone, teenagers and families.

Seniors and others who may need additional support can receive regular check-ins. People living alone, including those with special needs or mental health concerns, can request a check-in option.

Participating students can check in with a school resource officer if they are home alone after school, during summer break or at other times. Individuals may register themselves, and families may register loved ones who could benefit from a regular check-in.

The Sheriff’s Office described the program as an established service that continues to grow to meet community needs.
