Officials are urging visitors to respect and protect Brasstown Bald, Georgia’s highest peak, following recent acts of vandalism at the popular site within the Chattahoochee–Oconee National Forest.
The U.S. Forest Service emphasized in a public message that Brasstown Bald is a protected public space managed for everyone to enjoy. However, recent vandalism has damaged natural and built features, diverting valuable time and resources away from the site’s preservation and maintenance.
“Brasstown Bald is a protected site within the Chattahoochee–Oconee National Forest, managed as public land for everyone to experience and enjoy,” the statement read.
Vandalism on U.S. Forest Service property is a federal offense. Individuals caught damaging, defacing, or marking features of the landscape or structures may face fines, restitution for damages, legal penalties, and in some cases, loss of access privileges to the area.
The site is both visually monitored and regularly staffed, with personnel working to safeguard both visitors and the natural landscape.
Officials’ Plea to Visitors
Forest Service officials are calling on the public to help preserve the mountain:
Practice “Leave No Trace” principles
Respect all signs, structures, and natural features
Report any vandalism or suspicious activity to staff or law enforcement when safe to do so
“This mountain belongs to everyone and its protection depends on everyone who visits,” the statement continued. “Let’s keep Brasstown Bald clean, respected, and preserved for the next person standing at the summit.”
As one of the most visited sites in the national forest, Brasstown Bald's continued protection relies heavily on responsible visitor behavior.
Anyone witnessing vandalism or suspicious activity is encouraged to contact Forest Service staff or local law enforcement immediately.
