Clay County Fire & Rescue Thanks Commissioners for Maintaining Fire Tax Rate

Hayesville, NC — Clay County Fire & Rescue has expressed deep appreciation to the Clay County Board of Commissioners for their unanimous vote to keep the current fire tax millage rate in place while adopting a revenue-neutral property tax rate for the county budget.

In a statement released by the department, officials highlighted the decision as a strong show of support for public safety amid the county’s ongoing growth. “This decision demonstrates the Board’s continued commitment to public safety and recognizes that the growth Clay County has experienced in recent years has increased the demands placed on emergency services,” the statement read.

The department noted that commissioners took the time to review a detailed presentation, examine supporting information, and consider input from community members before reaching their decision. Maintaining the existing fire tax rate will provide critical stability for the department, enabling it to address staffing shortages, continue investments in equipment and infrastructure, and begin planning for a much-needed replacement of its primary station, which the department has outgrown.

“Maintaining the current fire tax rate will allow Clay County Fire & Rescue to address critical staffing needs, continue investing in equipment and infrastructure, and begin exploring long-term solutions for replacing our primary station,” the statement continued.

Fire & Rescue also extended heartfelt thanks to Clay County citizens for their engagement throughout the budget process. Whether residents attended public meetings, contacted elected officials, or simply educated themselves about the challenges facing local emergency services, their involvement was valued.

“Your understanding of the vital services provided by Clay County Fire & Rescue, and your willingness to support the funding necessary to maintain those services, helps ensure we can continue serving our community both today and in the future,” the department said.

The statement concluded with gratitude on behalf of all department members: “On behalf of the members of Clay County Fire & Rescue, thank you for your continued confidence in our organization and our mission to protect the lives and property of the citizens and visitors of Clay County.”

This funding decision comes as Clay County continues to balance growth with the need to sustain essential services. Residents can expect Clay County Fire & Rescue to remain focused on delivering reliable emergency response across the community.
